Home Tech Gadgets NZ: Smart Remotes, Speakers and Desk Gear Without Compatibility Surprises
Almost every home tech disappointment comes down to one thing: the gadget works, just not with what you own. A smart remote that cannot see the heat pump, a racing wheel the game does not support, a webcam clip that presses on the screen. This guide groups our living room, entertainment and desk gadgets by the check that matters for each, so you can buy once.
1. Smart remotes: infrared, line of sight and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi
Most heat pumps in New Zealand homes still run from a small infrared remote. The Wi-Fi Smart IR Remote Hub sends the same infrared commands from a phone app, so you can switch the heat pump on before you get home. It only works when four things line up:
- An infrared remote. The listing is clear that RF-only and Bluetooth-only remotes are not supported. On many phones, the camera shows a faint flash from an IR remote when you press a button; if the rear camera shows nothing, try the front camera, because some rear cameras filter infrared.
- Line of sight. Walls and cabinet doors block infrared, so one hub covers the appliances in one room. Put it on an open shelf facing the indoor unit, not behind the TV.
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and the Tuya Smart app. If setup fails, check whether your router has a separate 2.4 GHz network. Check the app's supported brands and functions for your model.
- Continuous USB power. It needs a 5 V / 1 A Micro-USB supply and a power point nearby.
The real value is scheduling. EECA's heat pump advice suggests a setting of at least 18 degrees to help fight damp and mould, but below 21 degrees to save power, using the timer to switch on just before you get home or wake up rather than running it around the clock. A version with a humidity sensor is available; check what it reports in the app before paying extra, and see our diffuser or humidifier guide on measuring room conditions.
For the TV, the Bluetooth Air Mouse Remote & Mini Keyboard pairs a motion pointer with a 77-key keyboard on the back, which makes searching streaming apps far quicker. Your TV, media box or computer must support a Bluetooth keyboard and pointer, and button functions vary by system.
2. Speakers and earbuds: know what plays the music
Several of our speakers look like something else. Know what each one actually does:
- The Retro Turntable Bluetooth Speaker and the smaller Retro Record-Player Speaker are styled like record players but do not play vinyl. The turntable model adds Bluetooth, AUX and TF-card modes, four built-in nature sounds and ambient light. The smaller one is Bluetooth-only with a 1000 mAh battery.
- The Astronaut RGB Bluetooth Speaker comes in basic, clock, and clock plus wireless charging editions. Only the editions named for those features include them.
- The Rose Dome LED Lamp & Bluetooth Speaker is a decorative lit rose under glass with a speaker in the base. Treat the glass carefully.
- The Bluetooth Music Cap has speakers built into an adjustable cap. Do not wash it with the electronics in, and keep the volume low enough to hear what is around you.
For earbuds, the Mini Bluetooth Earbuds are a low-profile pair with a USB-C case and Bluetooth 5.0, with no noise-cancelling claim. The B11 Bluetooth Earbuds list calls, music and an app-linked translation feature; the companion app, language list and any subscription terms are not specified, so check those before buying them for translation.
3. Gaming and viewing add-ons: check the platform
- The Steering Wheel Holder for PS5 Controller is a wheel-shaped shell for a compatible controller. It adds no electronics, so steering only works in games that support the controller's motion controls.
- The USB Arcade Fight Stick is a wired stick for supported PC and PS3 use. PS5, Xbox and Switch support is not specified.
- The Foldable Phone Screen Magnifier optically enlarges a phone screen in 12-inch or 16-inch-labelled models. It needs no power and does not add resolution.
4. Desk gear: check fit, connections and what is included
- Video calls: the USB Webcam with Fill Light & Microphone is fixed-focus with a monitor clip. Its imported title mentions 4K, but the capture mode is not verified, so the listing promises neither 4K nor a fixed Full HD output. The Clip-On USB Video Call Ring Light adds three light colours on USB power; check the clip does not press on your screen or block the camera.
- Desk surface: the RGB LED Mouse Pad & Desk Mat comes in 25 × 30, 30 × 78 and 40 × 90 cm, in 3 or 4 mm thickness. Measure your desk first.
- Focus: the Timed Phone Lock Box has a phone area of about 16.6 × 8.55 × 1.4 cm in the illustrated plastic design. Check your phone in its case before ordering.
- Making: the Mini Bluetooth Thermal Sticker Printer prints in monochrome on thermal paper through a companion app, with no ink. Paper-only options contain no printer. The Wooden Tensegrity Desk Sculpture Kit balances on tensioned chains, not magnets, and is decorative rather than load-bearing.
If your desk also needs a charging stand, our wireless charger buying guide covers phone, watch and adapter compatibility.
Buying tech as a gift?
Ask about the device it connects to before you buy: the phone, console, TV or heat pump brand. If that would spoil the surprise, choose something self-contained like the tensegrity kit or a record-player-style speaker. Our teen gift guide sorts more ideas by interest.
Your final check: what it connects to, the platform or app it needs, where it will sit and what is in the box. Then browse Smart Home & Remotes, Audio & Entertainment or Desk Essentials.
