Wireless Charger Buying Guide NZ: Phone, Watch and Plug Compatibility
A wireless charger can tidy a desk, but only if it works with the devices already on it. “3-in-1”, “magnetic” and “15W” describe different things. None is a promise that every phone, watch and earbud case will charge together at the advertised maximum.
Before comparing designs, write down the exact model of each device, including the earbud charging case. Then check the charger and power adapter as a complete setup.
1. Check the phone, then the case
First confirm that the phone supports wireless charging. A USB-C socket alone tells you nothing about that feature. Then check the supported wireless charging standard and the charger's compatibility information for that model.
A magnetic attachment feature is a separate check. The phone or its case must support the required alignment. Do not assume a magnetic-looking product is certified for a particular standard.
The Wireless Power Consortium's product database lists products certified to its standards. Check the exact model when certification matters to your decision; a generic “Qi compatible” description is not the same evidence as a matching certification record. The KOV options below should not be assumed Qi2-certified from their appearance or title.
2. Check the watch and earbud case separately
A phone that works on a pad does not prove that a watch will work on the raised watch area. Likewise, earbuds must have a compatible wirelessly charging case; the earbud brand name alone is insufficient.
The 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Stand lists older Apple Watch Series 1–5 and AirPods 2 with a suitable charging case in its supplier specifications. That is not confirmation of newer models, a Galaxy Watch or a Pixel Watch. Get your exact model confirmed before buying for the watch function.
3. Read “up to” as a ceiling, not a promise
Charging output depends on the phone, charger, adapter and setup. A 15W product label does not mean every phone receives 15W, or that every charging area supplies that amount.
The Foldable Magnetic 3-in-1 Charger lists phone outputs up to 15W, with lower supported modes, plus separate 2W watch and 3W earbud outputs. The AU-plug stand lists phone output up to 10W. Those are different specifications, even though both have three device areas.
4. Include the adapter in the buying decision
A USB cable is not a wall adapter. A cable-only option may cost less because you supply the power source. Match the model's input voltage and power requirements as well as the connector; a plug fitting physically does not establish electrical compatibility.
- Want an adapter option for NZ? The 3-in-1 stand has labelled AU-plug choices that include the selected adapter. It also has overseas-plug and cable-only choices. Pick deliberately.
- Want a pad that folds for packing? The foldable magnetic charger includes a USB cable but no wall adapter; its listing specifies 9V/2A input. It needs external power and is not a power bank.
- Want a stand with an accent light? The 15W stand with LED light confirms the stand in its packing list, but not cable or adapter inclusion. Confirm input requirements and accessories before comparing its total cost.
Charging lamps: make sure you are buying the charging version
The Rotating Moon Lamp has basic lamp-only versions and versions with a wireless charging base. The basic option does not charge a phone. Select an option explicitly labelled for wireless charging if that is the feature you need.
Combination products can also have higher power requirements. The 6-in-1 Speaker & Clock Lamp needs external power and has no built-in battery. Its listing calls for a compatible NZ USB-C PD adapter rated above 36W, such as a suitable 45W supply, for simultaneous functions. Its watch compatibility still needs separate confirmation.
Buying one as a gift?
Ask for the phone and watch model, not just “iPhone” or “Samsung”. Find out whether the recipient already owns a suitable adapter. If those details would spoil the surprise, choose a gift that does not depend on device compatibility; our teen gifts under NZ$50 guide includes reading, making and everyday-carry options.
Your final check: exact devices, suitable case, supported outputs, matching power supply and confirmed box contents. Once those are clear, browse Wireless Chargers for the shape and features that suit the desk.
