Cooling Mats and Elevated Pet Beds for NZ Summers
Hot floors and still air make summer harder for pets that cannot strip off a coat. A cooling mat or elevated bed will not replace shade and water, but it gives them a cooler surface to choose when they want it.
What each option does
- Cooling mat / pad: cool-feel fabric or gel-style surface that draws heat away relative to a normal rug. No power required on most fabric versions. Place on floor, in a crate or in the car. See the Cooling Dog Bed Mat for sizes S–XL.
- Elevated / raised bed: stainless or frame bed that lifts the pet off cold or hot concrete and improves airflow underneath. Removable covers make cleaning easier. The Stainless Steel Pet Care Bed is built for this.
- Hanging hammock: wall-mounted or free-standing perch that keeps a cat or small pet off the floor and in a quieter spot. Options include the Macrame Hanging Cat Hammock and window-style perches.
How to choose size
Measure your pet stretched out. For mats, size up if they sprawl. For raised beds, check the frame dimensions against their length and weight. Hammocks are usually for cats and small pets only, check the weight rating and mount into solid structure, not plasterboard alone.
If your dog already struggles with couch height, pair a cooler surface with easier access. See Dog Steps vs Jumping for when steps help more than another bed.
What to expect in NZ conditions
Passive cooling mats work best when the room is already cooler than the pet’s body. They are a comfort layer, not a fridge. Elevated beds help on decks and tiled floors that hold heat. Always leave a shady alternative and fresh water. Do not leave pets in closed cars, even with a mat.
Care and safety
- Wash or wipe covers as directed; dry fully before reuse.
- Supervise first use of hammocks and raised beds.
- Replace worn covers and check frame stability regularly.
