Summer Road Trip Accessories NZ: What Is Worth the Boot Space?

A summer road trip does not need a boot full of gadgets. It needs the things you use at stops to be easy to find, the things you use while driving to be set up beforehand, and everything else secured out of the way.

Start with the problem from your last trip: loose small items, awkward navigation, a wet beach towel or too much in your pockets. Fix that problem first. The accessories below are optional additions to a sensible packing plan.

For rear-seat clutter: an organiser with clear limits

The PU Seat-Back Organiser combines pockets with a fold-down tray. It suits storing small travel items and using the tray when the vehicle is parked. Choose a single organiser or a labelled pair according to how many seats you need to equip.

Check the seat and headrest shape before ordering. Straps must not interfere with airbags, seat controls or other safety equipment. Fold the tray away before travel. The photos may show a tablet, drinks and tissues; those props are not included.

Pockets are not a crash-tested restraint for heavy objects. NZTA's safe-loading guidance says objects inside a vehicle need restraint against movement. Pack and secure luggage appropriately rather than relying on friction or a decorative organiser.

For an older dashboard: check the connections before adding a screen

The B5300 Portable 7-Inch CarPlay & Android Auto Screen adds a separate display rather than replacing the car's head unit. Its listing shows a built-in speaker, AUX output and FM audio transfer.

Before choosing it, check three things: your exact phone's compatibility, which audio output your car can use, and where the screen can sit without obstructing your view or controls. The product diagram specifies 12V DC input. Confirm the supplied mount and power accessories rather than assuming the photo proves every item is in the box.

Rear-camera capability does not establish that a camera is included. Set up navigation and audio while parked. If your current phone mount and stereo already do the job, you may not need another screen at all.

For stops: a small bag beats unpacking the boot

The Crossbody Sling Bag gives small essentials a separate place when you leave the car for a walk or food stop. Choose it for its pockets and carry format, then check the dimensions against what you intend to put inside.

The USB port is a pass-through connection. It does not generate power and the bag does not include a power bank or phone cable. There is no established waterproof or theft-proof rating. If you already own a comfortable day bag, keep using it.

For beach stops: choose the towel size before the colour

The Quick-Dry Microfibre Towel comes in 42 × 60cm, 64 × 90cm and 80 × 130cm sizes. The largest is the listed beach size; the smallest is a compact travel towel.

A smaller packed item is useful only if it still covers the job. Compare the dimensions with your current towel and bring a way to separate wet gear from dry clothes. Hang it out when practical and follow the care instructions.

For shade and towel choices together, read our beach kit guide. This road-trip shortlist covers accessories, not a complete beach or emergency kit.

Is a powered drink holder worth adding?

The 12V Cup Holder Cooler & Warmer is an optional convenience for someone who wants a powered spot for a suitable drink container. Check its roughly 105 × 95 × 165mm dimensions, container fit and 12V, 36W power requirements against the vehicle.

Keep ventilation clear and set it up while parked. A displayed operating temperature is not a verified measurement of the drink throughout the container. Do not buy it for infant-feed preparation or as a substitute for a properly managed food cooler.

Pack by when you need it

  • Before leaving: test the route, mount, power connections and audio.
  • At stops: keep water, the day bag and towels accessible without unloading all luggage.
  • During travel: secure loose gear, stow trays and keep controls and visibility clear.

Browse Car & Travel after identifying the one problem you want to solve. Order early enough to inspect and test accessories before departure; the delivery window is an estimate, not a trip-date guarantee.
