Kitchen and Bathroom Upgrades for NZ Homes and Rentals: Small Changes, No Tradie
Most kitchens and bathrooms do not need a renovation. They need the bench cleared, the daily jobs made quicker and one or two annoyances fixed. Everything in this guide works without a tradie. If you rent, read the tenant section before you change or mount anything.
1. Clear the bench first
Bench space is the thing small New Zealand kitchens run out of first. The Kitchen Knife Rack holds knives, utensils, a cutting board and a pot lid in one unit, with slotted drainage so a wet board does not sit in a puddle. If you make espresso at home, the Acacia Wood Coffee Knock Box gives used grounds one place to go, with a removable knock bar. Wipe it clean rather than soaking it.
2. Make the daily jobs quicker
- Knife care: the Rolling Knife Sharpener supports 15° and 20° angles on the main kits, with diamond discs from coarse to fine. Disc-only options do not include the roller or magnetic base, and it is not for serrated blades or scissors. Check which angle your knives were made with before you start.
- Vegetables: the Carrot Vegetable Brush has stiff bristles for scrubbing grit from carrots and potatoes under running water.
- Dumplings: the USB Electric Dumpling Press seals filled wrappers in a powered mould. You supply the wrappers and filling and cook them separately. Keep fingers clear of the moving mould and the motor body dry.
- Cooking at the table: the USB Desktop Extractor Fan sits on a tripod beside a tabletop cooker and filters air through a removable screen. It recirculates air, so it does not replace a range hood or opening a window. It needs continuous 5 V / 2 A USB power.
3. Drinks and packed lunches
- The Stainless Steel Lunch Box comes in 1.2, 1.6, 2.3 and 3 L sizes labelled 304 stainless steel, plus a 1.7 L rectangular option. Do not microwave it.
- The LED Temperature Display Insulated Bottle holds 450 ml and shows a reading on the lid. Do not immerse the lid when washing.
- The Rechargeable Self-Stirring Mug stirs a drink at the press of a button. It is a stirrer, not a blender.
- The Ice-Tray Bottle freezes small ice pieces in a 500 or 800 ml bottle-shaped mould. It needs a freezer; it is not an ice maker.
- The 400 ml Electric Drink Cooler & Warmer has a 12 V DC, 36 W base. The car cable comes only with options labelled for it, so confirm the power supply matches before use.
- For the table, the Dachshund Wine Bottle Holder comes in wooden or plastic versions. Unusual bottle shapes may not sit securely.
4. Bathroom: small fixes that help every day
- Shower head: the Handheld Shower Head with Water-Stop Button lets you pause the spray at the handle. Most options are the head only; a grey hose-and-bracket kit is labelled separately, and filter cartridges are replacement parts with no purification claim. Check your thread and hose fit before ordering. The pause button is not a replacement for turning off the tap.
- Basin space: the Wall-Mounted Toothbrush Holder & Toothpaste Dispenser moves brushes and toothpaste onto the wall. It is rechargeable with a sensor-controlled UV feature; do not look into an operating UV light, and keep washing brushes as normal.
- Wet shoes: the Electric Shoe Dryer has paired inserts in regular or extendable styles, with an AU plug, the same pin type New Zealand uses. It is supplier-rated at 20 W. Follow your footwear's care label and keep it away from standing water.
5. Renting? Check the rules before you change anything
Tenancy Services sets out how tenants can make changes. You ask your landlord in writing, and the landlord has 21 days to respond. Landlords must not decline a minor change, but can set reasonable conditions. A minor change is low risk, easy to reverse and does not affect the structure or weathertightness. At the end of the tenancy you return the property to substantially the same condition, unless the landlord agrees otherwise.
In practice: if you swap the shower head, ask first and keep the original to refit when you leave. For anything that mounts on a wall, check how it fixes and ask before drilling. Freestanding items like the knife rack, lunch gear and shoe dryer need no permission at all. For lighting in a rental, see our guide to wall lights you can fit without rewiring.
- Short on bench space? The knife rack.
- Packing lunches every day? The lunch box and insulated bottle.
- Muddy shoes in winter? The shoe dryer.
Buying for a new place?
These make useful housewarming gifts because people rarely buy them for themselves. Our housewarming guide explains which gaps to fill, and our Christmas table ideas cover hosting.
