Cat Litter Mats: Size, Surface and Cleaning

A litter mat works best in the place your cat actually steps, which is not always directly in front of the tray. Watch a few exits before measuring. Some cats walk forward; others turn immediately or hop over an uncomfortable surface.

The aim is to catch some of the litter carried on paws and make cleanup easier. A mat cannot guarantee a scatter-free room, and it should not make the tray harder for your cat to approach.

Measure the exit route

Mark the tray footprint and the clear floor space around its opening. Allow enough landing space for the cat’s normal route without blocking a door or narrowing a walkway.

Compare those measurements with the exact mat option. The current KOV litter mat listing offers several sizes, including larger formats, but not every colour and construction is available in every size. Check the selected combination rather than choosing from the largest size mentioned in a guide.

Texture has to suit the cat

Honeycomb and other textured surfaces can collect granules, but the feel underfoot matters. Let your cat investigate and keep a clear route to the tray. If it jumps over the mat or avoids the area, reconsider the surface or position.

A bigger mat is not automatically better if it fills the only comfortable approach. Make the toilet setup easy to use first; then work on the granules that travel out of it.

Check how you will empty and wash it

Compare flat and foldable options by their actual construction. “Foldable” does not automatically mean the mat opens into two layers or has a particular pouring flap.

Before ordering, look at how trapped litter comes out, whether corners can be reached and how long the mat needs to dry. A texture that collects litter well can also hold dirt if it is awkward to clean.

  • Remove loose litter regularly.
  • Follow the material’s cleaning instructions.
  • Use a cat-safe cleaner when cleaning is needed.
  • Let the mat and floor dry before replacing it.

Water-resistant backing still needs checking

The product’s waterproof-backing description is not a promise that every spill will stay contained. Seams, openings, edges and liquid sitting beneath the mat matter too.

Lift it regularly to inspect and dry the floor, especially on timber or carpet. Do not leave a wet mat covering a spill and assume the backing has solved it.

Keep the tray itself inviting

A mat is one part of the setup. The tray’s cleanliness, location and your cat’s preferences still matter. Cats Protection’s litter tray advice recommends regular cleaning and avoiding strong scents that may put cats off.

If your cat suddenly changes its toileting habits or seems uncomfortable, contact your vet rather than treating the change as a problem a new mat will fix.

Common questions

Will a honeycomb mat stop all litter tracking?

No. Results depend on the litter, the route out of the tray, the mat texture and the cat. Expect help with cleanup rather than complete containment.

Should the tray sit on the mat?

It can if the arrangement is stable and suits the selected mat. Keep enough of the mat in the actual step-off route and follow the product instructions.
